Lab Manager

Job Purpose/Overview

 The Lab Manager position is responsible for ensuring the overall safety of the lab and is responsible for managing the daily operations of the PCH Site Laboratory to comply with the Mars Global Quality and Food Safety Standards.

 This position is accountable for accuracy and reliability of test results for both internal and external labs, monitoring test results, conducting trend analysis and providing recommendations to the Operations and Sanitation team to continuously improve the Quality and Food Safety Standard of the site, safe use of lab instruments/equipment and ensuring supplies needed to ensure smooth operation of the lab.

The role plays a key role within the PCH Site Operations Team to help shape and drive Quality Culture on site. 

Key Responsibilities

 As a Mars Associate you have an obligation to:

 Provide for a Safe Workplace

  • Ensuring all lab operations are managed in safe manner and in compliance to PCH Site Health and Safety Procedures
  • Ensure storage of all chemicals, supplies and waste in managed safely and in compliance to PCH Site Safety and Health Standards
  • Ensuring that all Lab associates wear the required PPE and follow safe lab practices at all times.
  • Role model the application of Mars Health and Safety standards in order to safeguard our associates and the assets we use through the Lead Safety @ Mars Program

Provide for Safe Products

  • Role model the application of Mars Food Safety and Quality Standards in order to ensure safe products to our consumers
  • Ensure site is in compliance to Mars Global Quality / Food Safety and all relevant external standards
  • Coach, inspire and role model the application of the Mars Quality Principle

Engage, Build and Lead a Talented Team

  • Recruit & On board - Ensure new direct reports have been fully on-boarded. Create specific on-boarding plan for each new direct report and have one-on-one discussions to align and review the on-boarding plan with each new direct report.
  • Engage - Lead the Engagement Impact Plan discussions and action plans for the Sanitation and Lab Team
  • Develop - Ensure all direct reports within the Team has a high-quality Development Plans
  • Maximize Performance - Ensure all associates within the team have solid objective plans with SMART goals
  • The Mars Way – have meaningful conversations with all associates in the team about how The Five Principles relate to their work. 

Site Laboratory Management Responsibilities

  • Ensure PCH Site Lab operates at all times to meet or exceed Mars Global Laboratory Standards and Procedures.
  • Deploy the Mars Global Laboratory Management Standards and test methods within the PCH site through consultation and collaboration with the Site Operations and Q&FS Team.
  • Conduct trend analysis of all test results and provide insights to Site Operations and Sanitation Team on recommendations to improve site practices
  • Ensure all lab operations meets the mandatory Safety, GMP and Lab standards - ensures that the laboratory is cleaned/sanitized and kept in an orderly manner
  • Ensures that all instrumentations/equipment is functioning properly - Maintain quality control of laboratory equipment performance by establishing quality standards; developing operations, quality, and troubleshooting procedures; certifying instrument performance and calibration; arranging equipment replacement, service, and repair.
  • Ensure that the Lab operations are managed within agreed operational budgets
  • Ensure accuracy and reliability of test results both internal, on-site factory and external laboratories and continuously improve laboratory management system to ensure compliance to Mars Global Standards.
  • Support the implementation of MSE, 5S and all related activities.
  • Provide hands-on technical expertise in resolving issues and identifying risks. This may include recommendations as to appropriate actions and evaluations of resources required.
  • Provide training and technical support to Operations Associates to ensure Mars Global Test Methods are followed on site for routine testing 

Ensure internal/external laboratories’ capability to deliver reliable test results through ISO system implementation, maintenance, external lab audit and new method implementation

Ensure that the lab team is trained / retrained as required on equipment operations, safety training, test method, etc.

Context and Scope

 This position reports to the Site Sanitation Manager. The Lab Team reports to this position.   The position maintains close relations with the following:

  • All Shift Managers and Site Sanitation on Site
  • PCH Q&FS Team

Regional Lab and Lab Managers of other Mars sites within the AP Region

Job Specifications/Qualifications

1. Education & Professional Qualification

Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Microbiology, Food Science, Engineering or other related field.

2. Knowledge/Experience

  • Minimum 5-7  years working experience in equivalent position within food and beverage manufacturing, preferably within multinational manufacturing / FMCG environment
  • Solid understanding of HACCP, Food Safety, Microbiology, Sanitation, Chemical Safety and Pest Control
  • Solid understanding of sanitation practices in an manufacturing environment and knowledge of current and developing sanitation techniques
  • Solid understanding of quality management system requirements and processes, within food or pharmaceutical manufacturing operations is required. 
  • Ability to adapt to changing organizational and operational needs and ability to lead others through change
  • Strong team player and leader with ability to work across multiple functions and disciplines
  • Good statistical and laboratory knowledge (Statistic, ISO/IEC 17025, GLP)
  • Strict attention to detail mindset
  • An energized, optimistic ‘can do’ attitude
  • Demonstrate Mars Five Principles
  • Good command of spoken and written English
  • Proficiency in using MS Office (Excel, Word, Powerpoint)
