1. Chiang Mai Old City covers the entire area, right from the city walls until the Nimmanhaemin roads. Though the entire area is largely popular among tourists for shopping and good quality pubs and restaurants, the most popular area in the Chiang Mai old city is Nimmanhaemin Road that has everything from fine diners to galleries to boutiques. The Night market at Huay Kaew Road is famous for its trendy, boutique and designer clothing shops.
2. Chiang Mai Riverside has an old world charm about it that is highlighted by its beautiful riverside and offers a lot of affordable eating joints and shops where you can buy textiles, antiques, and crafts all at reasonable rates along the banks of the Mae Ping River. It may not be considered as an elitist area but there is a great vibe about the place that attracts both locals and expats.
3. The Night Bazaar of Chiang Mai is the main market area within the city. It is famous for its nightclubs and selection of shops. Expats visit this market for cheap shopping and the night bazaar is set up at sunset and continues till late. 4. Pae Gate is a significant landmark of Chiang Mai. Weather and Climate

Getting Around in Chiang Mai

Most places in Thailand can be reached by either a bus, a taxi, a motor yacht charter or a train. Listed below are the usual modes of transportation in Chiang Mai.

Local bus- Chiang Mai has two new local buses, B1 and B2. 15 Baht is the minimum fare on both the buses, and it is good value if you are traveling on a budget.

Taxis- connect all parts of the city and they are usually parked at airports, bus stations, and railway stations. You may have to book a taxi before you travel as you may find it tough to get one on the streets of Chiang Mai as most of them will run on pre-booked schedules. A taxi ride inside the city will cost you between 60 and 80 Baht and a cab from the airport will cost you anywhere between 150 and 190 Baht.

Work Visas in Chiang Mai

If you are an expat looking to work in Chiang Mai, you will need a Thai Work Permit as it is illegal to work in Chiang Mai without a permit and you must apply for a Non-Immigrant Visa. The application of the Non-Immigrant Visa should be done before you enter Thailand and you will be eligible to apply for a work permit only after you have the Visa. It may take around 7 days for the Ministry of Labour office to process the work permit.

There are three conditions to receiving a work permit in Chiang Mai:

• You must have a non-immigrant visa.
• Your employer must file the documents.
• Your occupation should be legally approved.

Work permits will need regular renewals. A 3-month work permit will cost around 750 THB, a 6-month one will cost 1500 THB and a whole year’s permit will be around 3000 THB.
