AFP is seeking a dynamic, self-starting Thai-speaking video journalist for its South-East Asia bureau in Bangkok.

The ideal candidate will be a seasoned video journalist with excellent camera skills and a proven ability to work in a team. He/she will have substantial experience in Thailand and will have a wide range of sources and contacts.

Working in close consultation with the South-East Asia video coordinator, the Bangkok Bureau Chief and News Editor, the successful candidate will play a key role in AFP’s video coverage in Thailand.

The successful applicant must be experienced and comfortable shooting live video. Sourcing and verifying UGC content is also a key part of the role.

We are looking for someone brimming with visual story ideas which would appeal to a wide range of viewers both online and on TV, he/she must have a keen eye for the multimedia aspect of coverage and will work closely with the text, photo, and graphics departments.

Candidates should have a solid knowledge of social media and a strong interest in stories that will engage the young audience.

The role may require long work days and unsociable hours, dictated by the news agenda, and will include working some weekends and public holidays.

In an ever-changing media environment, the nature of the job could evolve in line with coverage demands and the requirements of an increasingly diverse client base.

Fluent or native-level English is essential as this is the working language of the bureau and region. Native-level Thai is essential. A knowledge of local affairs is expected. Hostile environment training is a plus for this post. 

While working under the daily direction of the South-East Asia video coordinator, the Bangkok Bureau Chief/ News Editor and the regional video chief in Hong Kong, the video journalist will ultimately report to the Regional Editor-in-Chief in Hong Kong.


  • The Bangkok bureau covers Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar.
  • AFP in Bangkok is staffed with some 20 people, including 8 reporters, one news editor/deputy Bureau chief, 2 fact-checkers, 4 photographers, 2 video-journalists backed up by 2 technicians and 2 admins.
  • The Bangkok bureau is also in charge of and coordinates the Hanoi, Yangon and Phnom Penh bureaus, which have one bureau chief, one photographer, one video-journalist, and news-assistants.
  • The work schedule includes some late nights and weekend shifts
