BASIC FUNCTIONS REQUIRED:

This unique Research Physician position provides an exciting opportunity to lead a large clinical unit that executes multi-site clinical trials and other research within an established and internationally recognized clinical research site (CRS) at the Silom Community Clinic. The CRS is a critical component of the research program of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention (DHAP) and its site in Bangkok (DHAP-Thailand); and CRS research aligns with CDC and DHAP initiatives to end the HIV epidemic. Research focuses on the implementation and development of novel and state-of-the art biomedical and integrated HIV prevention strategies and delivery formulations. Clinical services at the site support the research. Through a leadership position at the clinic and as an integral part of the team implementing the DHAP research portfolio, the employee with have opportunities to interact regularly with CDC, academic, U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) and global experts and leaders in HIV prevention and treatment, clinical trials, novel biomedical interventions, public health and populations at high risk for HIV. Opportunities may also exist for interactions with international experts in new health threats, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. The Research Physician will serve as Leader for CRS activities supported through the NIH HIV/AIDS Clinical Trials Networks and a collaboration between CDC and Emory University. The Research Physician will supervise clinical and research services at the CRS, with its large, multi-disciplinary unit of experienced clinical (physician, nurse, counselor), pharmacy, on-site laboratory, regulatory and data management teams. With guidance from the DHAP Behavioral and Clinical Research Section Chief, the incumbent is expected to independently plan and coordinate the research activities and negotiate scientific collaboration with Thai institutions. The incumbent will supervise study implementation, work with the team on data analysis and interpretation, and prepare and present clinical trial and other research results. The incumbent should also have skills in designing studies and writing research protocols. The Research Physician will work closely with the DHAP Behavioral and Clinical Research Section Chief to: 1) ensure that science conducted by SCC is of the highest scientific and ethical standards; 2) provide technical consultation on complex Thai and US policies related to research practice; and 3) educate SCC staff and external partners on scientific research methods, including epidemiology, biostatistics, and ethics. The incumbent will also provide feedback to clinic nurses and counselors regarding clinical issues in HIV infection and co-infections. He/she will also attend the regular clinic staff and study meetings and work with the Clinical Nursing Chief to ensure proper initial and ongoing training of clinic staff.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

  • Education: M.D. degree or Ph.D. degree in medical science or biological science, such as Epidemiology, Epidemiology Research, Clinical Medical Research, Biomedical research, or Public Health is required.  Licensed to practice medicine in Thailand is required.
  • Experience: At least five years of progressively responsible work experience in epidemiology or public health practice, epidemiological research, clinical medical research. or related biomedical research, including one year of supervisory experience is required.
  • Language:  Level IV (Fluent) Speaking/Reading/Writing Thai and English are required.  Please clarify level of your THAI and ENGLISH language skill.  A copy of valid TOEIC score at least 855 is required by the closing date (This may be tested).
  • Skills:
    • Must be able to recognize protocol deviation, to independently compose Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Site Specific Protocols (SSPs), and clinical study forms such as Clinical Research Forms (CRFs).
    • Must be able to translate and interpret complex technical scientific matter from English to Thai and vice versa.
    • Must be able to understand and communicate with senior-level policy-makers in both English and Thai to assure mutual understanding of technical, medical and other professional terminology.
  • Knowledge:
    • Incumbent is required to have a broad perspective and thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of epidemiologic, biomedical, or related scientific research, including facility with research design concepts and basic Quality Control and Assurance. Familiarity with clinical or epidemiologic aspects of HIV/AIDS prevention and care is necessary.
    • Incumbent is required to have an advanced knowledge of public health programs and strategies to be able to explain to partners and senior health officials how CDC approaches research and why it is undertaking specific types of activities.
    • Incumbent is required to have an advanced and detailed knowledge of the Thailand public health and medical systems to be able to explain to senior expatriate staff as well as to enable the integration of CDC-developed research activities appropriately into the Thai environment.
    • Incumbent is required to have advanced knowledge of large network or consortium research trials and the process for requesting, bidding, implementing, and closing out of these studies.
    • Standard knowledge of computer software packages including word processing, spreadsheets, e-mail, graphics and the statistical packages.
